Setup Guide
Install Speak on any device.
Speak works in any browser — but installing it gives you a faster, more reliable experience with no address bar, offline support, and a real app icon on the home screen. This is the recommended setup for classroom iPads and home tablets.
📵
No address bar
Opens like a native app — full screen, no browser chrome in the way.
📶
Works offline
Cached automatically after first load. Communication doesn't stop when Wi-Fi does.
🔒
Kiosk mode
Lock the app to just Speak — ideal for shared classroom tablets.
🏫
Multi-device
Install on every classroom iPad. Each child's profile syncs through their account.
1
Open Safari and go to the app
Type the address into Safari's address bar.
speakaac.org/app.html
Must be Safari — Chrome on iOS cannot install web apps.
2
Tap the Share button
The Share button is the box with an arrow pointing up — at the bottom of the screen on iPhone, or at the top right on iPad.
3
Tap "Add to Home Screen"
Scroll down in the share sheet until you see it. Tap it, then tap Add in the top right corner.
4
Open from the home screen
Find the Speak icon on your home screen and tap it. It will open full screen — no browser, no address bar — exactly like a native app.
1
Open Chrome and go to the app
speakaac.org/app.html
2
Tap the three-dot menu
The ⋮ menu is in the top right corner of Chrome.
3
Tap "Add to Home screen" or "Install app"
The wording varies slightly by Android version. Either option installs Speak on your home screen.
4
Open from the home screen
Tap the Speak icon. Opens full screen, no browser UI.
1
Open Chrome or Edge and go to the app
speakaac.org/app.html
2
Look for the install icon in the address bar
You'll see a small computer screen icon (⊕) on the right side of Chrome's address bar, or a "+" in Edge. Click it.
If you don't see it, go to the three-dot menu → "Save and share" → "Install page as app".
3
Click "Install"
A prompt will appear confirming the app name and icon. Click Install to add it to your desktop and taskbar.
4
Open from your desktop or taskbar
Speak opens in its own window — no browser tabs, no back button. Feels like a native desktop app.
🔒 For schools: enabling Kiosk Mode
After installing on a classroom iPad, open Speak and log in to the child's profile. Then go to Provider Settings → Kiosk Mode and toggle it on. The app will lock to full screen and disable the home button from exiting — the child can only use Speak until a staff member enters the PIN to exit.
Each child's profile is tied to their account. Installing Speak on multiple iPads and logging in with the same account syncs their vocabulary, settings, and event history automatically. Teachers can monitor all events through the Teacher Dashboard without needing the child's login.
Is this the same app that's on the App Store?
Speak is currently web-only. Installing it from the browser gives you the full app experience — offline support, home screen icon, full-screen mode — without needing an App Store download. A native iOS/Android app is planned.
Will it work if the internet goes out?
Yes. After the first load, Speak caches everything it needs. The symbol grid, audio, and all core communication features work offline. The safety channel alert requires an internet connection to send, but the app will show a clear message if that happens.
What if I install it on multiple iPads for one child?
Log in to the same account on each device. Settings, vocabulary, and the event log sync automatically across all of them.
Can I install it on a school-managed iPad (MDM)?
Yes. You can add speakaac.org to the MDM's allowed sites list and use Safari to install it as a web clip. If your district needs a formal setup guide, email support@speakaac.org and we'll walk through it with your IT team.
Does it cost anything to install?
Installing is always free. The app uses a plan-based model — see the
pricing page for details. Underfunded schools and clinics can apply for free access through our
school access program.
Ready to set it up?
Open the app in your device's browser and follow the steps above.
